It was customary in the ancient times to offer sacrifices of animals, particularly those of bulls or 'bullocks' as mentioned in the scriptures, to appease the anger of God regarding the sins of a person or people; however, this practice only served as foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who would once and for all lay down His life as a sacrifice for sin, and then become resurrected again to life to defeat death.Numbers 23:27-30, 1 Chronicles 29:21 and Hebrews 9:11-13.
